Tartu Observatory is an institute of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Tartu. The observatory operates under the Universities Act, the University of Tartu Act, the statutes of both the observatory and the university, and other laws.

The principal tasks of Tartu Observatory are teaching, research, and development as well as providing necessary services for the society in the areas of astronomy, remote sensing, space technology, and connected fields.

Tartu Observatory continues the work of the University of Tartu Observatory, founded in 1808, and the Estonian Meteorological Observatory, founded in 1865. Tartu Observatory is also a successor of the Institute of Astrophysics and Atmospheric Physics, established by the Act of the council of Ministers of the Estonian SSR nr 374 on August 22, 1973, and the research and development authority Tartu Observatory that was administered by the Estonian Ministry of Education and Research until December 31, 2017. Tartu Observatory is located in Tõravere Borough, Nõo Parish, Tartu County, Estonia.
